At one point in her ministry, Sister Liana had the opportunity to work in Mississippi. As she entered the state for the first time, she was welcomed with a highway sign which read: “Mississippi is like coming home again.” Over the years, Liana would often say, “This place (where she was at the moment) is like coming home again.”
Sister Liana was born and raised on the north side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her parents, William and Margaret, and their children were members of St. Anne parish and St. Stephen parish. As early as fourth grade, Liana wrote in a journal that she wanted to be a nun. She even set a timeline for herself.
Her desire became a reality when, in 1958, Sister Liana entered the Congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and later transferred to the School Sisters of St. Francis. The School Sisters of Notre Dame and the School Sisters of St. Francis both hold a special place in her heart.
The Mich family consisted of Liana, her Dad and Mom and her older brother Tom. Every summer, her family took a driving vacation. Her father was determined they see at least half of the United States before Liana entered the convent. She believed her father thought she might not see much of the world once she was in the convent!
However, her ministry took Sister Liana to places in Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma, and back to Wisconsin. She was a teacher and principal in Catholic elementary schools for 24 years. Sister Liana later received studies and preparation for both chaplaincy and spiritual direction. After fulltime ministry, Sister Liana volunteered in various settings including Clement Manor in Greenfield, Wisconsin, where she lived from 2020 to 2022. In 2022, Sister Liana moved to Our Lady of the Angels Convent.
Before Sister Liana moved to Our Lady of the Angels, she often walked past the convent and thought, “Living there would be like coming home again.” Indeed, when Sister Liana moved to Our Lady of the Angels, it was like coming home again, as living there brought her two religious communities together: the School Sisters of Notre Dame and School Sisters of St. Francis.
Coming home again! Our Lady of the Angels has been a blessed time for Sister Liana to prepare for her final day of entry into eternal life. We can almost hear her saying, “This place is like coming home again.”
Sister Liana, you have been a blessing to both the Congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and to our School Sisters of St. Francis Congregation. Rest in peace knowing that you are truly home.
