Jim and Mary Ellen Meyer

Jim and Mary Ellen MeyerJim and I accepted the invitation to become associates in 1976. I was a former member of the community (Class of 1956), and I had remained connected and joined a small group of classmates for monthly prayer, discussions, and social time.

Sisters Phyllis Wirtz and Marian Abing encouraged Jim and me to become associates. With two young children, we felt the Franciscan charism would enrich our family and give our children an opportunity to grow and share their musical violin performances.

When Sister Marcina asked us to be a part of a recital in Campbellsport, I asked if we could be first on the program as it was our daughter Jeanelle’s birthday, and we had a party planned. Sister Marcina shared that it was also her birthday and had a little gift wrapped for Jeanelle!

We appreciate the area community meetings, amazing liturgies, and socials. Jim became interested in baking bread for “The Sale” each Fall and he continued helping for 40 years (even after moving to California), learning and loving this hobby.

My interest in crafts also gave me an outlet, making things for “The Sale” and helping to set up St. Joseph Hall in preparation for the event. Sister Jeanette was in charge, enthusiastic and fun. While we were setting up the bulletin board one time, she said, “Mother Alfons, Sister is putting pins in her mouth!”

We have been in California since 2006. Jim sings in a chorus and I take watercolor classes. We both enjoy gardening, nature hikes, cooking, baking and spending time with our family. Associate Deborah Lompa helped us start a rewarding writing ministry. We write letters to incarcerated people, using our parish mailing address for security. We also volunteer in California State Prison-Solano in Vacaville on Sundays, assisting the Catholic chaplain with the Mass and facilitating the Centering Prayer Group.

We miss our close Milwaukee connection to community, but we appreciate the many online opportunities to connect through Zoom and Ustream. It doesn’t seem possible that we are celebrating 50 years as associates! There are so many blessings and we feel so much gratitude for the many sisters and associates who pray and walk the Franciscan path with us.

Congratulations, Jim and Mary Ellen, as you celebrate 50 years in collaboration with the School Sisters of St. Francis.
