Our Founding Story
The School Sisters of St. Francis were founded on April 28, 1874 in New Cassel, Wisconsin.
Campbellsport
In 1874, shortly after arriving in New Cassel, Wisconsin (now Campbellsport), the foundresses purchased land and erected their first motherhouse.
Milwaukee Motherhouse Fire
St. Joseph’s Convent was dedicated in 1888. It was home to candidates and professed sisters before a fire ravaged the building.
Sacred Heart Sanitarium
Sacred Heart Sanitarium was built in 1893 on land the congregation owned, just south of the Motherhouse.
Nursing
With a name like “The School Sisters of St. Francis,” it may be surprising that sisters also serve as nurses and other health professionals.
