Sister Mary Doralle Gering

Sister Mary Doralle GeringI moved to Aurora, Illinois, when I was eight years old and I lived across the street from St, Nicholas School, which was staffed by the School Sisters of St. Francis. I also had the sisters as my teachers at Madonna High School.

I entered the community as a response to an invitation. While visiting a classmate who was a School Sisters of St. Francis at Boylan High School in Rockford, one of the sisters asked me, “When ae you going to join our community?” I prayed and thought about it and made a decision to enter the Postulancy.

I was sent to St. Therese of Jesus Convent in Aurora in 1968. I anticipated returning to my position as a dental assistant, and while I waited to return, I worked as a nurse’s aide in a nursing home. I also conducted physical education classes at St. Therese School. I enjoyed my time with the sisters and felt accepted and loved.

My happiest memory was making final vows at my home parish, St. Nicolas. The sisters from St. Therese celebrated with me.

When I was invited to join the sisters at St. Joseph Convent in Aurora, I accepted their invitation. Once again, I felt at home. In fact, each time I accepted a new ministry, I felt called to that ministry. I have enjoyed each one.
