Provincial Assembly 2008
Daily Summary
July 24, 2008

submitted by Sister Kathleen Kunze

The day began with the prayer of a litany of women's power – women who used their gifts and power to change the world.

Jean Alvarez continued her presentation on leadership using material from Barry Johnson's book, Polarity Management. She spoke of the differences between problem solving and polarity management. Problems have points to solve and come to conclusions. Polarities have more than one side or opinion, neither of which is right or wrong, and need to be managed to make decisions that are right for the moment. Jean gave numerous examples of identifying what is a problem and what is a polarity, pointing out how we can come to an impasse when we treat polarity issues as problems.

Jean wished the Assembly participants well and the delegates said good-bye to her with the blessing of St. Francis. Following lunch the delegates, in table discussions, addressed the question of “How do we nurture our emerging culture of leadership personally, in community, and in ministry?”

After the refreshment break the Provincial Team was blessed by delegates and began their report by showing the new U.S. Province DVD entitled, “School Sisters of St. Francis: A Community in Mission. ” This DVD has also been distributed to Area Communities.

Sister Maureen McCarthy presented an explanation of the “Community Engagement Process. ” About 500 people were a part of the visioning sessions held across the U.S. - evoking the “vision of what our School Sister community would look like if we are wildly successful. ”

The day ended with a beautiful liturgy.
