Sisters highlight International Day of Climate Change
Sisters and staff gather to dedicate
the tree at St. Joseph Convent
Sister Mary Louise Miller blesses the maple tree
School Sisters at St. Joseph Convent in Campbellsport observed the International Day of Climate Action on October 23rd by planting a maple tree on the Riverside Patio.
Their action was part of a global movement to call to the attention of our world leaders the serious need to curb pollution. “Leading scientists tell us that our atmosphere has far too much carbon dioxide - we have more than 380 parts per million, while 350 ppm is the highest level that is healthy for all living things,” said Sister Therese Merrick who lives at the convent. “Global warming is becoming more noticeable every year especially in the Arctic ice melt and on the melting slopes of Mount Everest.”
The event was one of over 3,000 actions in 158 countries. The maintenance team at the convent planted the tree and the sisters had a short prayer service. Sister Mary Louise Miller blessed the tree while others watched through the windows because of inclement weather. On October 27th, a group of sisters and staff members gathered in the sunshine to dedicate the new maple tree.
