Becoming a Member
The School Sisters of St. Francis invite you into a time of searching to discover the best way to live your life and integrate your spirituality and your ministry. This process allows you to:
- Get to know sisters at a deeper level
- Learn about School Sisters of St. Francis—their history and their life
- Reflect upon your life and pray in community
- Make an informed decision about choosing to become a sister
- Integrate and develop your identity as part of a religious community.
Contact
Connecting with School Sisters of St. Francis (1 to 2 years)
The period of contact is a time for you to become familiar with School Sisters of St. Francis through correspondence, visits and dialogue.
Affiliation
Living in community (6 months to 1 year)
The period of affiliation offers you a time to live with School Sisters of St. Francis, sharing in community life, prayer and work while maintaining your financial independence.
Novitiate
Integrating your identity
The first year of novitiate marks your formal acceptance into the community. You will experience community life, study the history and life of the School Sisters of St. Francis, Franciscan spirituality and history, and theology; spend time in prayer, and participate in volunteer ministry.
Integrating your work
During the apostolic year of novitiate, you will be involved in ministry, live in community, and walk with a group of sisters as your companions. Following this year, you will profess vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
Vowed membership
You will enter a period of three to six years living as a vowed member of the School Sisters of St. Francis while continuing study, ministry, and the integration of your life leading toward a perpetual commitment.
