Nurturing a friendship with Jesus...
Luella Sharkey

Luella SharkeyI was born in a rural area of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where I attended the local public schools. Winter evenings were spent with my family around a large dining room table. We would spend hours reading, writing, studying, playing games and learning about life from my beloved parents. Summer was the time for outdoor activities. We were happy.

Graduation from high school led to a job with the federal government and assignments in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. Eventually I resigned and moved to Milwaukee where I worked for a large corporation. When I retired, I searched for a place where I could continue my education. I learned of a school for lifelong learning where several classes were taught by the School Sisters of St Francis. Never having known a religious sister, I decided to enroll in classes taught by sisters in the hope of getting to know something of their lifestyle. My curiosity led me to admiration and friendships began to develop. I learned of the Associate Relationship. Soon I found myself preparing to become an Associate. After about a year of prayer and reflection, I asked to share in the spiritual life and mission of the School Sisters of St. Francis. I was accepted and signed my first agreement in November, 1996. I joined the School Sisters in living the Gospel. It has been a wonderful experience!

By recognizing and sharing God's gifts to us, we nurture our friendship with Jesus which began at baptism. My personal mission is to encourage, demonstrate and promote justice especially for the elderly, the poor, the marginalized and disadvantaged — with special attention to women and children. As part of my personal mission and to have a direct involvement with the School Sisters, I volunteer one day a week (Sundays), assisting the sisters who reside at Sacred Heart Center in Milwaukee. Like many older adults, the sisters sometimes feel pain, loneliness and fear. My contribution is small compared to what has been given by them throughout their lives and even now in their service of "prayer and presence." I thank God for the many gifts given to me.
