St. Francis Province — North India

In the 1960s, over 30 young women came from Kerala, South India, to Germany and entered our community. They were educated as nurses, midwives, kindergarten teachers and parish assistants. A group of these sisters returned to India in 1975 and opened a convent and school in Raisen, Madhya Pradesh in the north. In 1977, another group of Indian sisters began working in Kerala in the south of India. Since that time, the community has grown rapidly in both the north and south.

Sewing CooperativeNorth India became a province of the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1996 and took the name St. Francis Province. The Provincial House is located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Currently there are over 75 sisters in North India and 15 young women in the process of entering our community.
