Even though Mothers Alexia and Alfons and Sister Clara emigrated to the United States to found our community — the School Sisters of St. Francis — Mother Alexia never gave up her dream of establishing a community in Germany. In 1895 she opened the first mission in Erlenbad, Germany, and in 1907 our European Province was officially established.
Today our sisters of the European Province serve in Germany, Switzerland and Honduras in these ministries:

Caring for the sick and elderly in hospitals and retirement homes;

Accompanying the laity in parish pastoral programs;

Providing services for homeless people;

Educating children in kindergartens and orphanages;

Promoting healing of soul and body at a pilgrimage retreat center;

Directing centers of spirituality and providing opportunities for faith formation.
